Bariatric Surgery Evaluations
A bariatric surgery psychological evaluation is a required part of the surgical process. It is not meant as an obstacle in any way, but as a support system. Its purpose is to help ensure that you’re mentally and emotionally ready for the many changes that follow surgery, and that you have all the support you need in place to start this process!

If you’re considering weight loss surgery, you probably already know that there are many reasons why people struggle with weight — including the impact of physical, health-related, emotional, trauma, behavioral, relational, and societal influences. Just as your decision to pursue surgery is deeply personal, so are the experiences and factors that led you here.
A bariatric surgery psychological evaluation helps you and your medical team gain a clearer understanding of your readiness and needs before surgery. Together, we explore:
Your motivation for pursuing surgery
Current eating, health, and lifestyle habits
Understanding of the surgical process and its implications
Emotional and psychological preparedness
Any fears or anxieties related to the procedure
Expectations for outcomes
Strengths and supports available to you
Awareness of the lifestyle and behavioral changes needed after surgery
Weight loss surgery is a major step. Many people find that the biggest adjustments come not only from physical recovery, but also from navigating emotional changes, evolving identity, and shifting relationships. The pre-surgery psychological evaluation helps ensure that you’re supported, informed, and prepared for both the challenges and the growth that come with this life-changing journey.

The psychological bariatric evaluation includes a 1 hour clinical interview (in-person or online, depending on your preference). During this interview I will ask you broad questions about your life (family history, living situation, support systems, etc) and more detailed questions about your medical history, proposed surgical procedure, and expectations for surgery. You will be filling out questionnaires and screening tools online prior to our meeting, through the secure client portal.
During the clinical interview I will provide you with educational material, resources, and we will have time for you to discuss any concerns you may have.
I will then provide a psychological report with recommendations to you and your medical team, within 7 days of your evaluation date. We will also schedule a brief follow-up call to discuss recommendations together, or any questions you may have.
I will be in communication with your medical team as needed throughout this whole process, and available for any follow-up services if needed.

Bariatric surgery evaluations with me cost a flat fee of $1200 (for clients based in New York State). Depending on your insurance, the partial or full cost of the evaluation may be covered. I recommend that you contact your insurance directly to see whether they will reimburse you for the cost of the evaluation prior to scheduling.
